Are you considering getting dental implants, but have some concerns about whether the procedure is safe? Worries over the risks involved in any type of treatment are completely normal. The good news is that with dental implants, not only are the risks low, but the odds for success are impressively high. Here’s why if you’re on the fence about this procedure, you can rest assured that these restorations are a ‘safe’ bet!
What Are Dental Implants?
To truly understand the minimal risks involved in dental implant treatment, you first need to understand what it is. A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth replacement that is permanently attached to the jawbone. Your dentist will insert a titanium post into the bone, and over the course of a few months, it will permanently fuse in place via the process of osseointegration. Once healed, your dental implant will receive a single crown, a dental bridge, or an implant denture, which will remain in place unless it needs to be removed by a dental professional. These restorations not only look and feel just like your real teeth, but they also are just as durable and long-lasting, so you can use them to eat a full, healthy diet.
What Are the Risks of Dental Implant Surgery?
When considering the risks of dental implant surgery, it is important to understand that all surgery carries some risk. Thankfully, with this procedure they are very low. The most common risk is infection, but you can greatly reduce the odds this occurring by following the post-op instructions provided by your dentist. Other potential problems include nerve damage, implant failure, and allergic reactions to the metal in the implant. For patients with sensitivity to certain alloys, speak to your dentist as there are different types of implants for allergic patients.
What Are the Post-Op Risks of Dental Implants?
Post procedure, your risks are also quite low, but you still do have a slight risk of dental implant failure. The good news is that they boast an impressive 95 percent success rate, however neglecting to maintain your oral hygiene can cause a condition called peri-implantitis which is very similar to gum disease and a leading cause of implant loss. It can occur any time during the life of your implant, not just in the beginning, so maintaining your smile is extremely important with this treatment. Other common but rare risks include failed osseointegration, which occurs during the healing process, and typically only if you do not have sufficient jawbone density to begin with.
With dental implants, the great news is that surgery and treatment are extremely safe, and the odds for a success are very high. Your dentist will be happy to discuss the risks (as well as how to overcome them) at your dental implant consultation. Furthermore, because it is extremely important that you’re comfortable with tooth restoration choice, should you have any questions or concerns about treatment at any stage of the process, they will be happy to discuss them with you before advancing to the next step.
